a story of heritage
our history

NRB Food Industries was set up in 2010 with the main nature of our business being the production of Banana Chip Cavandish topping with Gula Melaka. This idea brought us to study on the needs, supply and consumption of Gula Melaka, or be known as Coconut Palm Sugar, Coconut Nectar Sugar or Gula Masak.
It can also be illustrated as Caramel Coconut Sugar. It tastes of creamy salted caramel, suitable for dessert or topping for bread varieties. The name itself will differentiate its texture, colour and taste. The initial supply was inconsistent forcing NRB Food Industries to find the best solution to maintain supply and quality of the final product.
In 2012, the company decided on producing Gula Melaka. The founder was Tuan Hj Baharum Hanafiah, retired from Security Company and directly involved in producing Gula Melaka back home at a small scale. He was assisted by his wife, Puan Hajjah Che’Pon Mahmud especially on maintaining the right quality and to meet the Malaysian taste. The name Malasa came from Melaka's various names in history such as Malakat (Arabic), Mulaqah (Arabic), Amalaka (Sanscrit), Malagas (Portugis). We decided to use it but differentiate it to reflect all of Melaka's rich history of names.
In January 2012, the company decided to commence commercial production of Gula Melaka at Halal Hub Industrial Zone in Melaka. The market study has shown that awareness of health benefits in consumption of Gula Melaka as a substitute sweetener has grown significantly. There are a lot of people that started to switch their white sugar to Gula Melaka. The company has a health-conscious consumer in our minds when we are producing our products.
Since then, the company started producing Gula Melaka in various shapes and textures to fulfil the many demands and needs of our consumers in the Malaysian market.

birthed from heritage

“Today, people are looking for something good and healthy in their food consumption.
The growing awareness and healthy practice by these people led to the discovery and demand for palm sugar. It led us to where we are today.
With the right strategy, for the right customer, we can go far in the market by bringing Melaka and Malaysia's heritage on a global scale.”
